Weather Update: Thunderstorms expected in Delhi; heatwave conditions likely to ease starting June 20, IMD issues alerts for several states
PTC News Desk: According to the India Meteorological Department, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are predicted to persist for the next 24 hours over several portions of north India. However, when a western disturbance moves toward northwest India on Thursday, June 20, the situation will gradually improve, according to the statement.
According to the IMD forecast on Tuesday, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya are predicted to see heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next two days, interspersed with isolated extremely severe showers.
Today’s IMD heatwave forecast
• Highest temperatures in the northern Indian plains ranged from 44°C to 46°C, surpassing average values by 5-8°C. In Prayagraj, East Uttar Pradesh, a maximum temperature of 47.6°C was the highest recorded.
In several regions of Uttar Pradesh, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are predicted for June 19, and in some locations, these temperatures may persist into June 20.
• On June 19, there is a high likelihood of heatwave conditions in northern Madhya Pradesh and northern Rajasthan, followed by a drop.
• On June 19, warm to extremely warm weather is predicted in several sections of Uttar Pradesh, as well as warm weather in a few isolated locations of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

Today’s IMD rain forecast
• Over the next three to four days, favorable conditions are predicted for the Southwest Monsoon to continue moving forward and into more areas of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Northwest Bay of Bengal, the remaining portions of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and some areas of Bihar and Jharkhand.
• Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh are predicted to see isolated periods of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall until June 21.
• Widespread light to moderate rainfall is anticipated in Sikkim on June 19, with sporadic heavy to extremely heavy showers. Heavy rainfall is expected to persist on June 20–22.
• During the next five days, there is a forecast for light to moderate rainfall that is scattered to fairly widespread over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha. There will also be thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph).
Today’s weather forecast for Delhi
• In certain areas, heatwave conditions are anticipated. The severe’red’ heatwave signal was lowered to ‘orange’ on Wednesday by the IMD.
• The IMD stated that warm nights are expected.
• It anticipated the possibility of isolated regions seeing thunderstorms with lightning and gusty gusts of 30 to 40 kmph.
