IMD Forecast: Northwest faces heatwave, coastal areas brace for flash floods
PTC News Desk: The India Meteorological Department issued a warning on Saturday indicating that a new heatwave outbreak is expected to start over northwest India on June 9. Additionally, because of the high rainfall over the next 24 hours, it warned of flash floods over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods in coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Konkan, and Goa.
Over the next five days, heatwaves are probably going to persist in several areas of Uttar Pradesh, northeastern Madhya Pradesh, and eastern and east-central India. Over the next five days, there is a good chance of heavy rain in Maharashtra, the coastal regions of Karnataka, and the north interior Karnataka. The meteorological bureau predicted very heavy rain in isolated areas over Maharashtra from June 8 to June 11 and in Karnataka on June 8 and 9.
It warned on Friday that flash floods could occur in the next 24 hours over coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Konkan, and Goa. The Met Department stated that certain low-lying areas may see surface runoff and flooding as a result of the anticipated rainfall.
In numerous areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh, northern Madhya Pradesh, western Uttar Pradesh, as well as in a few isolated areas of Haryana, Delhi, Bihar, and Gujarat, the highest temperatures recorded were between 42 and 45 degrees Celsius. In these places, the temperature was 2–4°C higher than usual. There were isolated areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar where heatwaves were prevalent.
The majority of southern Haryana, Delhi, southern Uttar Pradesh, south-eastern Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and south-western Bihar saw maximum temperatures on Friday between 43 and 46 degrees. This was 2–4 degrees higher than usual. The highest recorded maximum temperature in Uttar Pradesh was recorded at Jhansi, at 45.8 degrees.
On June 8, the south-west monsoon spread to further areas around the central Arabian Sea, southern Maharashtra, Telangana, and portions of southern Chhattisgarh, southern Odisha, and coastal Andhra Pradesh. In the next two to three days, there are favorable conditions for the monsoon to continue advancing into Telangana, some further areas of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, and the remaining portions of the central Arabian Sea.
