Supreme Court to form panel for permanent resolution of farmers’ grievances

PTC News Desk: The Supreme Court on Thursday announced that it will soon establish a multi-member committee to permanently resolve the grievances of farmers. A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant, Justice Dipankar Datta, and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan scheduled the next hearing for September 2 and instructed the Punjab and Haryana governments to submit tentative issues concerning the farmers for the committee’s consideration.

The Punjab government informed the Supreme Court that in response to its August 12 order, they had met with protesting farmers, who agreed to partially reopen the blocked highway. The bench encouraged both the Punjab and Haryana governments to continue engaging with the farmers, urging them to remove tractors and trolleys from the highways.

Previously, on August 12, the Supreme Court had directed the Punjab government to persuade farmers protesting at the Shambhu border since February 13 to clear the road, emphasizing that “highways are not parking spaces.”

The case stemmed from the Haryana government’s appeal against a high court order requiring the removal of barricades at the Shambhu border near Ambala, where farmers have been camping since February 13. The Haryana government had initially erected these barricades on the Ambala-New Delhi national highway in February after farmer groups announced plans to march to Delhi to demand a legal guarantee for minimum support prices (MSP) for their crops.
