Supreme Court calls coaching centres ‘death chambers’ in Delhi tragedy
PTC News Desk: Three Civil Service aspirants perished last month in Rajendra Nagar during heavy rain, in a structure that violated fire and civic safety regulations. The Supreme Court has already sent notice to the government of Delhi and the center over this incident.
The Supreme Court accused the government of “playing with the lives of children” during the hearing on Monday morning, criticizing them for not regulating coaching centers.
These locations are now death chambers. Online coaching programmes are permitted as long as safety regulations and fundamental standards for a respectable existence are fully adhered to. Aspirants’ lives are being played with by coaching centers.” Judges Ujjal Bhuyan and Surya Kant remarked.
A dispute over the city’s infrastructure has arisen as a result of the students’ deaths, which were caused by stagnant rainwater that poured down into the basement with sewage because the drains failed to remove it.

Last week, the Delhi High Court delivered a scathing critique of police and city authorities, declaring, “Some officer has to be liable… these people must be alive,” before sending its case to the CBI.
The Municipal Corporation’s capacity to develop and maintain city infrastructure, particularly during emergencies like floods, was seriously questioned by an enraged court. They may not know how municipal planning functions, but they are ill-prepared to handle it. It is the duty of MCD authorities to guarantee that drains are operational; otherwise, it is criminal negligence. This place is not a swimming pool.”
Thus far, investigations have uncovered several infractions committed by the proprietors of the building and coaching center, such as using the basement without proper authorisation and fabricating a Fire Department certificate. They are two of the seven persons who have been detained thus far.
Additionally, a city court last week rejected the co-owners of the building’s bail requests, stating that the case had been transferred to a federal agency and that the subject was no longer within its purview.
