Stone-pelting and clashes erupt during Mithun Chakraborty’s roadshow in Midnapore, West Bengal
PTC News Desk: During actor-turned-BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty’s roadshow on Tuesday, some people threw stones, and there was a fight in the town of Midnapore, West Bengal, according to PTI, which quoted the police.
The seasoned actor was outspokenly supporting BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul for the May 25 Lok Sabha election in the Midnapore seat.
Paul has accused members of the Trinamool Congress of throwing stones and glass bottles during the procession; the state’s ruling party has refuted this accusation. Paul and Chakraborty were not hurt in the incident.
Starting in Collectorate More, the roadshow headed in the direction of Keranitola. As hundreds of BJP supporters chanted chants, Chakraborty waved to the audience from a car alongside Paul.
But as the roadshow got to the town’s Shekhpura More neighborhood, some bystanders threw stones and bottles at the convoy.
After then, they were attacked by BJP workers who were at the roadshow, and fighting started. On the other hand, the police claimed that everything were swiftly brought under control.
The TMC is turning to this kind of hooliganism out of fear that the BJP’s popularity would grow. Paul remarked, “They can go to such lengths as to offend a great actor like Mithun Chakraborty.”
She said that attendees of the TMC meeting on a street corner were the ones who started the violence. “Such conduct by those who tried to create chaos in a peaceful convoy is despicable,” Paul stated.
The claim made by the Trinamool Congress that its members hurled stones at the BJP parade was refuted by the party.
“We don’t support such disorderly behavior. The roadshow was a bust, thus the BJP is the ones putting on the theater,” TMC spokesman Trinankur Bhattacharya stated.
In some of the seven Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, where the fifth round of polls was held on Monday, there had been reports of intermittent fighting earlier in the day.
There were reports of altercations in Khanakul, where a BJP panchayat leader was hurt, and Arambagh, where a local TMC leader was hurt. In the Hooghly district are both. In the Howrah district, fights also broke out at Uluberia and Salkia.
