Sheikh Hasina to return to Bangladesh for elections, says her son Sajeeb Wazed

Bangladesh crisis: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return to Bangladesh once the newly established caretaker government decides to hold elections, according to her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy. After weeks of violent protests, which led to her resignation, Hasina fled to India on Monday.

A caretaker government, headed by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, was sworn in on Thursday and will oversee the upcoming elections. Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who lives in the United States, told the Times of India that his mother is currently in India and will return to Bangladesh as soon as the interim government announces the election date.

Following her departure, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party is not part of the interim government. Her exit came after a student-led uprising that resulted in nationwide violence, claiming around 300 lives and leaving thousands injured. She is currently residing in a safe house in the New Delhi area. Although there have been reports that Hasina plans to seek asylum in Britain, the British Home Office has not provided any comments.

On Thursday, India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar mentioned discussing Bangladesh with his British counterpart, but did not disclose any specifics. Meanwhile, Bangladesh leader’s son Joy said he might enter politics if necessary, expressing confidence that the Awami League would participate in the elections and possibly secure a victory.
