Rahul Dravid’s contract as Team India’s head coach unlikely to extend

PTC Web Desk: Rahul Dravid’s contract as Team India’s head coach is unlikely to be extended as BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has stated that the process to hire a new head coach would commence soon. This clearly points that Rahul Dravid’s tenure is  coming to an end anytime soon.

Rahul Dravid has been serving as the head coach since November 2021. His contract was extended after the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, there are high chances that his contract may not be extended further as the BCCI has already chalked out plans to release an advertisement for the position. His current contract is set to expire in June, which will be coinciding with India’s participation in the T20 World Cup.

Shah says said if Dravid wants, he can apply for the position again, However, there will be no automatic extension as was done before. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) would take further call on the new coach’s nationality—Indian or foreigner.

When asked about the chances of having different coaches for different formats, BCCI chief Jay Shah stated that such a decision would also be made by the CAC. He also made a mention about the presence of several all-format players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant.

The BCCI chief also addressed the criticism surrounding the Impact Player rule in the IPL, mentioning that discussions with stakeholders, including franchises and broadcasters, would be conducted to decide its continuation. He said while the rule was not permanent, no significant opposition against it had been received so far.
