Punjab: Bodies of two of the three children drowned in Rajasansi canal recovered, search continues for third
PTC News Desk: People are currently struggling to cope with the extreme heat, seeking relief in various ways. Unfortunately, this has led to an increase in cases of children drowning while bathing in canals. A recent tragic incident occurred at the Lahore Branch Canal near Rajasansi, Amritsar, where three children were swept away by the strong current while bathing and went missing. Two of their bodies have since been recovered.
The deceased have been identified as Lovepreet Singh (17), Krish (15), and Jaskaran Singh (13), all residents of Tolanangal village. These children were attempting to cool off in the canal when the rope they were holding onto suddenly broke, causing them to be carried away by the water. Divers are currently searching for the third child.
In another incident, three children drowned in the Upper Bari Doab Canal (UBDC) near Harsha Chhina village, while their friend was rescued by passersby. Jaskaran Singh (14) and Krish (14) are still missing, while the body of Lovepreet Singh (13) was recovered by divers. Jashan (13) was rescued by passersby.
“Divers from Beas and a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have reached the spot. They are searching for the missing boys,” said Karanpal Singh, SHO, Rajansansi police station.
Kulwinder Kaur, Lovepreet’s mother, mentioned that her son often bathed in the canal. “I don’t know what happened today,” she said.
Krish’s mother said that all the boys had attended a fair and then went to the canal to bathe. Nirmal Singh, a local resident, explained that the boys had partaken in langar before going to the canal, where the rope they were using suddenly broke. “The canal is around 12 feet deep,” he said.
These incidents have left the families devastated, raising concerns about the administration’s apparent inaction. Cases of children drowning are being reported from various districts in Punjab, highlighting the urgent need for increased safety measures and awareness.
