Pune Porsche accident: Rs 1,758 fee non-payment delays registration of luxury car worth over Rs 1 crore
PTC News Desk: Updates on Porsche Accident News in Pune: Top officials of the state transport department told news agency PTI that the permanent registration of the luxury Porsche Taycan automobile involved in the deadly accident that killed two IT professionals in Pune, Maharashtra, had been delayed since March because the owner had not paid the Rs 1,758 charge.
The 17-year-old son of a well-known builder is accused of driving the electric luxury sports sedan Porsche Taycan, which is reportedly priced at Rs 1.61 crore ex-showroom and may go up to Rs 2.44 crore. According to police, the builder was intoxicated when the accident occurred early on Sunday morning in Kalyani Nagar.
The Porsche vehicle was imported in March by a dealer in Bengaluru and was then brought to Maharashtra with a temporary registration, according to Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar, who spoke with PTI.
“It was discovered that a specific registration fee had not been paid when it was presented to the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), and the owner was requested to pay the outstanding amount to finalise the process. But after that, the car wasn’t taken to the RTO to finish the registration procedure, according to Vivek Bhimanwar, as reported by PTI.
According to officials, electric vehicles registered in Maharashtra are exempt from road tax. As a result, the Porsche Taycan’s registration cost came to a mere Rs 1,758, comprising Rs 1,500 for hypothecation costs, Rs 200 for smart card registration payments, and Rs 58 for mailing expenses. It’s interesting to note that Porsche India’s website includes the ex-showroom costs of a number of models, with the Taycan model’s price being the highest at ₹1.86 crore.
The car was found to have a temporary registration certificate from Karnataka that was good from March to September 2024, according to officials. Officials stated that the owner was responsible for obtaining permanent registration from the RTO; the Bengaluru Porsche dealer, who had completed the temporary registration, was not at fault. During this time, vehicles with temporary registration are limited to driving to and from the RTO.
The 17-year-old youngster who was allegedly driving the car will not be allowed to get a driver’s license until he becomes 25, according to Vivek Bhimanwar.
Four restaurant executives and the 17-year-old driver’s father were taken into custody by the police on Tuesday for giving alcohol to the underage customer. In Kalyani Nagar, two IT engineers on motorbikes were struck and killed by the automobile driven by the adolescent. Just hours after the collision, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) granted the accused bail despite the seriousness of the incident, sparking uproar across the country.
In response to the JJB’s “lenient view” of the fatal accident, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is in charge of the home ministry, expressed astonishment and dismay and argued in favor of trying the teenager as an adult.
According to the police report filed in relation to the event, the father handed his son the automobile while knowing he did not have a valid driving license, putting his life in danger.
Who was hurt in the vehicle collision in Pune?
Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, two 24-year-old IT workers from Madhya Pradesh who were employed in Pune, were named as the deceased. Three accused—an owner and two managers of separate eateries where the youngster and his companions drank alcohol prior to getting behind the wheel of the car—were remanded to police custody until May 24 by a Pune court on Tuesday.
Restaurants sealed
On the district collector’s directives from Pune, the Maharashtra excise department shut the two establishments.
In the midst of the chaos, Devendra Fadnavis surprised everyone by stopping by the Pune Police Commissionerate to assess the case and then spoke to the media. “I went over the case again. I also talked with officials about what might be done to stop these kinds of things from happening,” he stated.
According to Fadnavis, the police brought up IPC section 304 and other pertinent laws as soon as the incident occurred. They also stated in their remand request to the JJB that the adolescent should be treated as an adult because he was only 17 years and eight months old.
