To a query posed by PTC Punjabi Canada staffer, Justin Trudeau began by acknowledging the significant obstacle in Canada-India relations posed by the inclusion of Indian agents in the killing of Canadian citizen and Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Trudeau emphasised the necessity for India to respect Canadian laws and sovereignty for fostering better relations between the two nations. He reiterated Canada’s commitment to upholding the freedom of expression and opinion for all its residents, highlighting it as a fundamental aspect of Canadian democracy.
Asserting the paramount importance of ensuring the safety of every Canadian resident, Trudeau addressed concerns regarding the influence of external actors in domestic affairs, particularly when it jeopardises the security and well-being of Canadian citizens.
The Canadian Prime Minister’s remarks come amid growing tensions between Canada and India following the revelation of Indian agents’ involvement in the killing of Canadian citizen and Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
