PM Narendra Modi holds talks with Sikh delegation in New York
PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with several members of the Sikh community during his visit to the United States, where community leaders expressed their gratitude for the various initiatives undertaken by his government to support Sikhs. The meeting took place in New York, and attendees described the atmosphere as warm and positive.
Jasdip Singh Jassee from the Sikhs of America organization shared his enthusiasm after the meeting, stating, “We were so happy, and what a positive feeling we had after the meeting. We greeted the Prime Minister as soon as he walked into the room with the Sikh traditional jaikara of ‘Jo Bole So Nihal,’ and the Prime Minister graciously responded with ‘Sat Sri Akaal.’”
Among those present was prominent Sikh leader Darshan Singh Dhaliwal from Wisconsin, who also engaged in discussions with Modi. Jassee remarked to PTI, “We had a very good discussion. The Prime Minister has done a lot for the Sikh community.”

Reflecting on the Prime Minister’s contributions, Jassee noted, “I don’t think any other Prime Minister in the history of India has done as much for the Sikh community as Prime Minister Modi. This includes the opening of the Kartar Sahib Corridor, the celebrations marking the 550th birthday of Guru Nanak, the abolition of the blacklist that prevented many Sikhs from visiting India, and efforts to secure justice for the victims of the 1984 Sikh genocide that occurred under the Congress government.”
The anti-Sikh riots in 1984 followed the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards, leading to widespread violence against the Sikh community.
Jassee emphasized the importance of the meeting, saying, “We thanked him today for what he has done for the Sikh community. We are also planning to take another delegation to India to meet him soon and discuss various issues.”
He concluded by congratulating Prime Minister Modi on his “very, very successful visit” to the United States, highlighting the positive engagement between the Indian government and the Sikh community.
