NIRF Rankings 2024: The Ministry of Education has announced the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, with IIT-Madras securing the top spot in both the engineering and overall categories. IISc Bengaluru has been named the top university in the country.
In its ninth edition, the NIRF has introduced three new categories: open universities, skill universities, and state-funded government universities. The AICTE chairperson, Anil Sahasrabudhe, also revealed plans to introduce ‘sustainability rankings’ next year.
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) dominated the rankings in the overall and engineering categories, while IISc Bengaluru, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and Jamia Millia Islamia emerged as the leading universities in India.
This year saw changes in evaluation criteria, including adjustments in the faculty-to-student ratio, which has been revised to 1:10 for medical institutes and 1:20 for state government universities. The ranking framework assesses institutions across five parameters: teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.
A total of 16 categories were used to rank higher education institutions, including overall, universities, medical, engineering, management, law, architecture and planning, colleges, research institutions, pharmacy, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, state-funded government universities, skill universities, open universities, and innovation. This year, a record 10,885 institutions participated in the rankings, compared to 5,543 last year.
