NEET-UG row: SC declines to stay process NEET counselling, sends notice to NTA
PTC News Desk: In the midst of a major controversy over purported flaws in the administration of the medical entrance exam, the Supreme Court has once again refused to postpone NEET-UG 2024 counselling. The National Testing Agency has received a notice from the supreme court.
The Supreme Court scheduled a hearing for July 8 after marking the new pleas and outstanding petitions.
In order to allow three high courts to hear petitions contesting the National Eligibility Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 administration and requesting an independent investigation into claims of malpractices involving a paper leak and the awarding of grace marks, the supreme court on Thursday postponed the proceedings.
Notice was given on four transfer petitions filed by the National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers NEET-UG, and eleven additional petitions voicing comparable complaints by a vacation bench made up of Justices Vikram Nath and SVN Bhatti. The case was listed concurrently with many other cases pending on the same issue scheduled for hearing on July 8.
The court last Friday rejected the request to halt the counseling, noting that even a small infraction required careful attention.
The court had declared, “If there is even the slightest negligence on the part of anyone, it should be dealt with thoroughly.” The test was given on May 5. The outcomes were released earlier this month.
Approximately sixty students who passed the nation’s most difficult exam, the NEET, with perfect scores reported abnormalities in the way the admission exam was administered.
Concerns about certain students’ grace marks have also erupted. The NTA invited more than 1500 applicants for medical school to repeat the exam in response to objections.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told the media that a group has been formed to recommend changes to NTA following the leak of the UGC-NET paper online, which resulted in the exam’s cancellation.
“A high-level group will be formed by the government to discuss NTA reforms. The committee’s suggestions are anticipated to enhance NTA’s operations, structure, transparency, examination procedure, and data security measures. We pledge to do testing with zero errors. He stated that worldwide specialists will be on the panel and that notification will be sent soon.
