Narayana Murthy criticises lack of focus on population control in India
PTC News Desk: Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy addressed the issue of population growth as a major challenge facing India, highlighting that the country has not given sufficient attention to population control since the Emergency period. His comments came during the convocation ceremony at Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology in Prayagraj, where he was the chief guest.
Speaking to the assembled graduates and attendees, Mr. Murthy underscored the pressing concerns related to India’s burgeoning population, limited per capita land availability, and healthcare infrastructure. He remarked, “India faces significant challenges with respect to population growth, the availability of land per capita, and the adequacy of healthcare facilities.”
He further elaborated that the lack of focus on population control since the Emergency era could jeopardise the country’s sustainability. In contrast, he noted that nations like the United States, Brazil, and China benefit from significantly higher per capita land availability.

In addition to his comments on population control, Mr. Murthy emphasised the role of professionals in advancing national progress. He asserted, “A true professional’s responsibility is to contribute to the nation’s progress. This contribution is rooted in having high aspirations, dreaming big, and working diligently to realise those dreams.”
Reflecting on personal experiences, Mr. Murthy shared that progress often requires sacrifices from previous generations. “My parents, siblings, and teachers made significant sacrifices for my advancement. My presence here as the chief guest is a testament to the fact that their sacrifices were not in vain,” he said.
During the ceremony, a total of 1,670 degrees were awarded. Notably, 34 gold medals were presented to postgraduate students, while 13 were awarded to undergraduates.
