MDH, Everest Masala Row: US FDA investigates Indian spice makers following bans in Hong Kong and Singapore
PTC News Desk: MDH, a prominent spice brand, has reassured consumers of the safety of its products amid allegations by food regulators in Hong Kong and Singapore regarding the presence of certain pesticides. Responding to concerns raised earlier this month by Hong Kong’s Center for Food Safety (CFS), which identified pesticide ethylene oxide in samples of pre-packaged spice-mix products from Indian brands MDH and Everest, MDH has vehemently denied these claims.
According to the CFS, several varieties of spice mix products, including MDH’s Madras Curry Powder, Everest Fish Curry Masala, MDH Sambhar Masala Mixed Masala Powder, and MDH Curry Powder Mixed Masala Powder, were found to contain ethylene oxide. However, MDH has stated that it has not received any official communication from food safety regulators in Hong Kong or Singapore regarding these allegations.
In a statement, MDH refuted the claims of ethylene oxide presence, asserting that they lack substantiating evidence. The company emphasised that neither the Spice Board of India nor the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has received any communication or test reports from authorities in Hong Kong or Singapore regarding this matter.
MDH emphasised its unwavering commitment to product safety and quality, emphasising that it does not use ethylene oxide at any stage of its spice processing, storing, or packing procedures. The company reassured consumers of its compliance with health and safety standards, both domestically and internationally.
The company’s tagline, “Asli Masale Sach Sach, MDH MDH” (True spices, true MDH), and “Real Spices of India” underscore its dedication to providing authentic, high-quality spices to customers.
Following Hong Kong’s directive, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) also ordered a recall of imported Everest Fish Curry Masala. However, MDH’s statement reinforces its stance on product safety and quality.
India, as the world’s largest producer, consumer, and exporter of spices, upholds stringent standards in spice production. In the fiscal year 2022-23, the country exported spices worth nearly Rs 32,000 crore, with major exports including chilli, cumin, spice oil and oleoresins, turmeric, curry powder, and cardamom.
