Manmohan Singh turns 92, PM Modi, Kharge, and Rahul Gandhi share warm wishes

PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes on Thursday as former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh celebrated his 92nd birthday. Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to convey his greetings, saying, “Birthday greetings to former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. I pray that he is blessed with a long and healthy life.”

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also extended his heartfelt wishes to Singh on this special occasion. Former Congress leader Rahul Gandhi joined in the celebrations with a thoughtful message, stating, “Happy Birthday to Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Your humility, wisdom, and selfless service in shaping our country’s future continue to inspire me and millions of Indians. Wishing you good health and happiness always!”

Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, West Punjab, Pakistan. He pursued his education at Panjab University in Chandigarh and later at the University of Cambridge. Singh earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Oxford.

His career began as an economic advisor to the Government of India, leading him to significant roles, including steering the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He entered the Rajya Sabha in 1991 and ran for his first Lok Sabha election in 1999, although he was unsuccessful.

In 2004, when the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) came to power, Sonia Gandhi, then the coalition leader, declined the Prime Minister’s position and recommended Manmohan Singh for the role. Singh served as Prime Minister until 2014, when the BJP, under Modi’s leadership, won the general elections, significantly reducing the Congress party to just 44 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha, marking a historic low for the long-established party.
