Kolkata doctor’s autopsy report reveals details on injuries and physical assault
PTC News Desk: The postmortem report of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has revealed a series of horrifying details. The report, obtained by various media houses, highlights the extent of the injuries inflicted on the victim before her death and confirms evidence of sexual assault.
Key Findings from the Autopsy Report:
- The victim suffered over 14 injuries across her head, face, neck, arms, and genitals, all sustained prior to death.
- The cause of death was determined to be “manual strangulation associated with smothering.”
- The manner of death has been classified as homicide.
- Evidence of forceful penetration was found, indicating sexual assault.
- A “white, thick, viscid liquid” was discovered in the victim’s genitalia, further supporting the assault findings.
- The report also noted haemorrhaging in the lungs and the presence of blood clots in the body.
- No fractures were identified in the autopsy.
- Blood and other bodily fluid samples have been sent for further analysis.
The tragic incident occurred on August 9, when the postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in a seminar room at the hospital. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested the day after the crime. Due to the severity of the case, the Calcutta High Court has transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The brutal nature of the crime has sparked widespread outrage, leading to protests and strikes by doctors and nurses across West Bengal and beyond. Amidst the growing public anger, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, resigned from his position and has since been questioned by the CBI.
In response to the incident, the West Bengal government has announced several measures aimed at improving the safety of women in workplaces, particularly in state-run hospitals. These measures include the creation of designated retiring rooms and the establishment of CCTV-monitored ‘safe zones’ for women, especially those working night shifts.
The Supreme Court of India has also taken cognizance of the matter and is scheduled to hear it on August 20, underscoring the national significance of this tragic case.
