Candidates in fray
In the Jalandhar West Bypoll , there are 15 candidates in the fray Mohinder Bhagat of AAP is leading. Sheetal Angural (BJP), Surjit Kaur (SAD), Surinder Kaur (INC), Binder Kumar Lakha (BSP), Mohinder Bhagat (AAP), Sarabjit Singh Khalsa (SADSSM), Ajay Kumar Bhagat (IND), Ajay Pal Valmiki (IND), Aarti (IND), Inderjit Singh (IND), Deepak Bhagat (IND), Neetu Shatran Wala (IND), Raj Kumar Saqi (IND), Varun Klair Vari (IND), Vishal (IND)
AAP has fielded Mohinder Bhagat, the son of former minister and BJP MLA Bhagat Chunni Lal. Bhagat joined the AAP after leaving the BJP last year.
The Congress has named Surinder Kaur, a former senior deputy mayor and five-time municipal councillor in Jalandhar, as their candidate. She is a known Dalit leader from the Ravidassia community.
The BJP has fielded Angural, who switched sides in March after leaving the AAP. He won this seat in the 2022 Punjab assembly elections on an AAP ticket. Angural comes from the Sialkotia Ravidassia community.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has announced its support for Binder Kumar, the Bahujan Samaj Party’s nominee.
Stringent Security Measures
The administration has implemented stringent security arrangements for the vote counting, which will be conducted at Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women, Jalandhar. Election officials, central security forces, and Punjab Police will maintain strict vigilance to prevent any untoward incidents.
The Jalandhar West (Scheduled Caste-reserved) seat became vacant following the resignation of the sitting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA, Sheetal Angural, who switched to the BJP on March 27, along with the then-AAP Lok Sabha MP from Jalandhar, Sushil Kumar Rinku
Jalandhar West Assembly Bypoll Voter Turnout
District Election Officer cum Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Aggarwal informed that 54.98% voter turnout was recorded in the bypoll of Jalandhar West Parliamentary Constituency on July 10, 2024.
Dr Aggarwal stated that the bypoll was conducted peacefully with no incidents of violence during the voting process.
