IndiGo flight suffers tailstrike and severe damage during take-off, returns to airport

PTC News Desk: On September 9, an IndiGo flight, designated as 6E 6054, experienced a significant tailstrike during its takeoff from Delhi airport. The aircraft, which was en route to Bengaluru, sustained considerable damage to its tail section upon hitting the runway.

Images of the damaged tail reveal several white dents on the aircraft’s blue exterior, indicative of a severe tailstrike. A tailstrike occurs when the rear part of an aircraft contacts the runway during takeoff or landing, potentially causing structural harm, particularly to the rear pressure bulkhead—a critical area that maintains cabin pressurisation.

Upon realizing the issue, the pilot promptly notified the air traffic controller (ATC), who then granted permission for the aircraft to return to the airport. The plane landed safely, with no injuries reported among the passengers or crew.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Delhi airport authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident. The DGCA has temporarily removed the flight crew from duty as part of the inquiry to determine the cause of the tailstrike.

Passengers on the affected flight were deboarded, and alternative arrangements were made for their onward journey. As of now, IndiGo has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
