IMD alerts: North India to continue facing heatwave, heavy rainfall expected in certain states

PTC News Desk: IMD weather forecast: During the 24 hours leading up to 8.30am, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions were experienced by most of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi region, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, western parts of Gangetic West Bengal, southwest Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. There have also been reports of heatwave conditions in certain areas of West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Jammu & Kashmir.

Many areas of Haryana—Delhi, Punjab, East Uttar Pradesh, north Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and other areas—saw temperatures reach between 44 and 46°C. For this time of year, these temperatures are 4–8°C higher than average. With a maximum temperature of 46.3°C nationwide, Kanpur IAF in East Uttar Pradesh registered the highest temperature.

For the next five days, there will be a persistent heatwave, according to IMD warnings. Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi are predicted to have comparable conditions on June 16–17, while Uttar Pradesh is predicted to experience widespread heatwave to severe heat wave conditions through June 18. During this time, there will be isolated heat waves in Bihar and Jharkhand, following which the severity will gradually decline.

Isolated areas of Jammu Division, Himachal Pradesh, north Rajasthan (June 16–18), Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal (June 16–17), and Vidarbha (June 16) are among the other regions expected to experience heatwave conditions. On June 16 and 17, warm weather is predicted in certain areas of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Delhi and Vidarbha are forecast to see warmer nights from June 16 to 18.

According to the IMD’s forecast, there is a good chance that the southwest monsoon will spread over the course of the next four to five days into additional areas of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Northwest Bay of Bengal, some Gangetic West Bengal, remaining Sub Himalayan West Bengal, and some parts of Bihar.

Weather patterns are being influenced by cyclonic circulations across northeast Assam and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, as well as an east-west trough that extends from northwest Bihar to Meghalaya. Across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, this setup is predicted to provide widespread light to moderate rainfall over the next five days along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph). Over these areas, there is a chance of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall. On June 18, Assam and Meghalaya are expected to see isolated extremely heavy rainfall.

From June 18–20, a new round of disturbances is predicted to hit the country’s northwest, encompassing regions such as Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and neighboring states. Light to moderate isolated to scattered rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) are all expected throughout this disturbance. For the next five days, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh can expect isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall and comparable meteorological conditions.

The weather over western and southern India will be influenced by a trough that extends from this system to the east-central Arabian Sea off the coast of Maharashtra and a cyclonic circulation over the northeast Arabian Sea near Saurashtra.

Over the next five days, there is a chance of mild to moderate rainfall in areas such as Gujarat, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra & Marathwada, along with thunderstorms and lightning. On June 16 and June 18–20, in Madhya Maharashtra, on June 16 and June 19–20, and on June 16, in Saurashtra & Kutch, isolated, heavy rainfall is predicted.
