Delhi takes stringent measures to combat water wastage amid acute heatwave; violators to face heavy fine

New Delhi, May 29: Amid an unprecedented heatwave and a severe shortage of water supply, the Delhi Government has announced stringent measures to combat water wastage in the capital. With temperatures soaring and Haryana failing to release Delhi’s share of water, conservation has become a critical priority.

In the wake of this crisis, the office of the Minister of Water, Atishi, has directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to deploy 200 teams across the city to enforce strict water conservation rules starting from 8 am May 30. These teams will impose a fine of Rs 2,000 on those found wasting water and disconnect any illegal water connections at construction sites and commercial establishments.

The directive comes in the wake of growing concerns about rampant water wastage in various parts of the city. The acute shortage has been exacerbated by illegal connections and the misuse of domestic water supplies for non-domestic purposes, such as construction and commercial activities. “Conservation of water is extremely important in these circumstances,” the minister said, highlighting the need for immediate and decisive action.

The 200 teams deployed by the DJB will focus on three main areas of concern

Washing of Cars with Pipes: The practice of using pipes to wash cars leads to significant water wastage. The teams will ensure that car owners resort to more water-efficient methods, such as using buckets.

Overflow of Water Tanks: Many households and establishments neglect to monitor their water tanks, leading to frequent overflows and wastage. The teams will check for such negligence and take corrective action.

Illegal Connections and Misuse of Domestic Supply: Unauthorised connections at construction sites and commercial establishments will be a primary target. These illegal connections siphon off water meant for domestic use, worsening the scarcity for residential areas.

Minister Atishi has called for public cooperation in this critical time. “We urge all citizens to be vigilant and responsible in their water usage. Every drop counts,” she said. The minister also warned that the fines and penalties are part of a broader strategy to ensure equitable distribution and efficient use of the limited water resources available.

The government is also focusing on public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the importance of water conservation. These campaigns will include tips on reducing water usage in daily activities, such as taking shorter showers, fixing leaky faucets, and reusing water for gardening.
