Delhi-NCR auto and taxi drivers strike: Know the key reasons behind the protest
PTC News Desk: Delhi-NCR is expected to experience significant transportation disruptions on August 22 and August 23 due to a strike organised by auto and taxi driver unions. The strike, involving over 15 unions from across the region, is a protest against app-based cab services such as Ola and Uber, according to Mint.
Reasons for the Strike
The unions have expressed dissatisfaction with both central and state governments, claiming that they have not provided adequate compensation or addressed their concerns despite repeated appeals. Kishan Verma, President of the Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union, criticized the government’s response to issues related to these app-based services.
He stated, “For several years, we have been writing to governments and departments about companies like Ola and Uber, but no one listens. These companies present their side, and the government presents its side, but these businesses operate as a game of donations, with the government also involved. We demand an end to this game.”
Verma also highlighted several issues exacerbated by the presence of app-based services, including job losses for auto and taxi drivers. He alleged that private cabs associated with companies like Ola and Uber are involved in illegal activities such as smuggling and trading in alcohol and drugs.

“Employment for auto and taxi drivers, which is being affected or taken away, must be addressed. To address these issues, we are going on strike,” Verma added.
The unions have decided to suspend all auto and taxi services in Delhi-NCR on August 22 and 23, and they are advocating for a ban on app-based cab services. Verma noted concerns about the proliferation of e-rickshaws and bikes with private number plates, emphasising that these issues need to be addressed to ensure fair competition and safety in the transportation sector.
