Cyclone causes Mizoram stone quarry collapse, killing 10

PTC News Desk: On Tuesday morning, in the middle of intense rain, a stone quarry in Mizoram’s Aizawl district collapsed, leaving ten persons dead and dozens missing, according to authorities. According to the police, the incident happened at around six in the morning in a region on the southern fringes of Aizawl town, between Melthum and Hlimen, following Cyclone Remal’s destructive path through the state.

The collapse of the mine also devastated many buildings nearby. The deceased people’s bodies have been found. But according to a police officer, several more people are still buried beneath the rubble, as reported by news agency PTI.

He went on to say that the aftermath of the nonstop rain was having an impact on rescue operations. Three non-Mizos are among the ten workers who have died, according to the most recent reports.

A youngster who was recovered from the scene during the search was immediately brought to a nearby hospital for additional care. As the rescue mission for the trapped workers continues, several other workers—all of whom are apparently non-tribals—are thought to be dead.

According to the officials, there have been landslides caused by heavy rainfall in several parts of the state.

A landslide on National Highway 6 at Hunthar has blocked off Aizawl from the rest of the country, they added. They continued by saying that landslides had also caused disruptions to a number of intra-state roadways.

Following the downpour, all government employees were advised to work from home, with the exception of those who provided critical services. Schools were closed.
