Chandigarh’s humidity on the rise as monsoon approaches
PTC News Desk: The dry conditions that persisted throughout May and June are beginning to give way to humid conditions as the monsoon draws near.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), humidity increased to 60% on Monday after traces of rain were reported in several sections of the city. However, chilly winds provided some much-needed relief in certain locations.
“South-easterly winds become active when the monsoon system approaches, bringing moisture from the Bay of Bengal,” stated AK Singh, director of IMD Chandigarh. Premonsoon showers are predicted on Thursday or Friday due to a shift in the wind pattern from the previous dry westerly winds that were sweeping through the area.
While all was going on, the maximum temperature dropped to 39.9°C on Monday, still two degrees above average, from 40.4°C on Sunday. However, the lowest temperature was slightly higher than expected, rising from 30.3°C to 30.6°C.
Tuesday’s high might still be in the upper range, but as premonsoon showers move into the city on Wednesday, temperatures are predicted to begin to decline.
