Caller suggested Kolkata doctor ‘might have died by suicide’ on August 9, reveals family

PTC News Desk: On August 9, following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, her distraught parents received three urgent calls from the hospital’s Assistant Superintendent. These calls, which have now surfaced, reveal the confusion and panic at the hospital as the student’s condition worsened.

In the initial call, the assistant superintendent urged the parents to rush to the hospital, saying, “Your daughter is not well. Can you please come to the hospital immediately?” Despite the father’s pressing questions, the response was vague: “She is not well. We are admitting her. Can you come quickly?” The staff member added, “The doctors will tell you what happened when you get here.”

The second call conveyed even greater urgency, with the staff member reporting, “Her condition is very critical. Please come as soon as possible.” The father, increasingly alarmed, demanded more details but was told, “The doctors will explain. Please come here quickly.” When the father asked who was speaking, the staff member identified herself as the assistant superintendent, not a doctor, and ended the call abruptly when further questioned.

The third and final call revealed the dire nature of the situation. The staff member, sounding distressed, said, “She might have committed suicide or died. The police are here. We are at the hospital, in front of everyone, making this call.” This call has raised serious concerns about the hospital’s handling of the case and the events leading up to the trainee doctor’s death.

The family, devastated by their loss, is now demanding a full explanation from the hospital authorities about what happened in those critical moments.

On August 10, a day after the body of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of the hospital, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer who frequented the hospital, was arrested by Kolkata Police. Roy’s arrest followed the discovery of a Bluetooth device near the victim’s body and CCTV footage placing him on the third floor of the hospital where the seminar hall is located.

During interrogation by the CBI, Roy confessed to the crime, recounting the sequence of events on the night of August 8:

• Roy and a friend visited RG Kar Hospital to inquire about a family member.
• At 11:15 pm, they left the hospital, drank alcohol, and visited Sonagachi, a red-light area in North Kolkata. Finding no success there, they traveled to Chetla, a red-light area in South Kolkata.
• While traveling, they molested a girl on the road. In Chetla, Roy’s friend had sex with a woman while Roy, who was outside, talked to his girlfriend on a video call.
• After returning to the hospital, Roy went to the trauma center on the fourth floor.
• At 4:03 am, CCTV footage showed Roy near the seminar hall on the third floor. He entered the hall, where the victim was sleeping, and committed the assault.
• After the attack, Roy left the scene and went to the house of Anupam Dutta, a Kolkata Police officer.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI. In the meantime, widespread protests have erupted in Kolkata and across the country, demanding swift justice for the trainee doctor.
