PTC News Desk: On Friday, Bharti Airtel raised the rates for its cellular tariffs by 10–21 per cent. This was the first price increase since December 2021, and it came the day after rival Reliance Jio announced increases ranging from 12 per cent to 25 per cent on its mobile contracts.
On July 3, the new tariff will go into force. In a statement, Bharti Airtel stated, “We have ensured that there is a very modest price increase (less than 70p per day) on the entry level plans, in order to eliminate any burden on budget challenged consumers.”
According to Bharti Airtel, for telecoms in India to have a financially viable business model, the average revenue per user (ARPU) for mobile devices must be greater than ₹300. It stated, “We think that this level of ARPU will enable the significant investments needed in spectrum and network technology and offer a modest return on capital.”
On the BSE, Bharti Airtel shares increased by about 2 per cent to Rs 1496.80. In the first trading session on June 28, Reliance Industries and Bharti Airtel emerged as the top gainers.
