Alcohol home delivery via Swiggy, BigBasket, Zomato, and Blinkit coming soon?

PTC News Desk: Low-alcohol beverages including beer, wine, and liqueurs may soon be delivered by apps like Swiggy, BigBasket, and Zomato, along with liquor. According to industry insiders cited in the Economic Times, states such as New Delhi, Karnataka, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Kerala are investigating pilot projects related to the same.

According to the executives, authorities are weighing the benefits and drawbacks of the decision. Alcohol can currently be delivered to homes in West Bengal and Odisha.

“This is to accommodate an increasing number of foreign nationals living abroad, particularly in larger cities; shifting consumer preferences that view moderately alcoholic spirits as recreational drinks to go with meals; and women and senior citizens who have expressed dissatisfaction with traditional liquor vending machines and storefront experiences.”

Online models guarantee age verification, complete transaction records, and limit adherence. According to Dinker Vashisht, vice-president of corporate relations at Swiggy, “In addition, online tech stacks synchronize with regulatory and excise requirements, ensuring adherence to timings, dry days, and zonal delivery guardrails.”

During the Covid-19 lockdowns in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Assam, some liquor deliveries were permitted. Executives in the retail sector reportedly stated that internet delivery have increased sales in West Bengal and Odisha by 20–30%.

“By enabling online home deliveries of liquor, states can enhance consumer convenience, drive economic growth, and align with global trends while ensuring responsible and regulated alcohol distribution,” stated Rahul Singh, chief executive of pub chain The Beer Cafe, in an interview with Economic Times.
