PTC News Desk: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 162 million loan to support tourism development projects in Himachal Pradesh. Announced on Thursday, this initiative aims to enhance the state’s tourism potential by upgrading and preserving its rich heritage and cultural sites, while also promoting sustainable and inclusive tourism.
According to Vivek Vishal, Senior Project Officer at ADB, the project is set to elevate Himachal Pradesh’s standing as a key tourism destination by developing modern facilities, restoring historic landmarks, and strengthening the overall tourism infrastructure.
The “Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism Development Projects” will focus on key districts including Mandi, Hamirpur, Kullu, and Kangra. Some of the major developments under the project include:
- Heritage and Cultural Sites: Heritage centers in Mandi and Hamirpur will be promoted, while Naggar Castle in Kullu will be restored to its historic glory.
- Public Spaces and Facilities: Public spaces will be beautified, and modern tourist facilities will be constructed. A convention center with accompanying facilities will be built in Kangra.
- Wayside Amenities: Essential amenities along tourist routes in Kullu, Hamirpur, and Kangra will be improved to enhance the experience for travellers.
In addition to these developments, the project will incorporate environmentally friendly solutions such as solar lighting and electric vehicles. Special considerations will be made to ensure that the facilities are accessible to the elderly, women, children, and persons with disabilities, ensuring a more inclusive tourism experience.

Furthermore, the project will introduce new attractions, including wellness centers, tourist recreation hubs, an adventure sports center, a water park complex, and biking trails. These ventures are expected to create employment opportunities for local communities and provide a significant boost to the regional economy.
The ADB will also support efforts to strengthen the institutional capacity of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Board. This will involve developing a comprehensive tourism strategy and marketing plan, as well as improving district-level tourism management. By enhancing the management and development of tourist destinations, the project aims to establish long-term growth and sustainability in the region’s tourism sector.
This comprehensive development plan not only seeks to increase tourist footfall but also ensure that tourism in Himachal Pradesh is environmentally sustainable, economically inclusive, and beneficial to local communities.
