Uttarakhand moves closer to implementing Uniform Civil Code as panel finalises draft rules

PTC News Desk: The committee responsible for drafting the rules for Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has completed its deliberations and is set to present its recommendations to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in the form of a booklet. If approved, the Uniform Civil Code could be implemented in the state as early as November 9, 2024.

The Uttarakhand Assembly had passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill in February this year, and on March 13, the bill received the assent of President Droupadi Murmu. This development paves the way for Uttarakhand to become the first state in India to officially implement the UCC.

Last month, Chief Minister Dhami reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to bringing the UCC into effect before November 9. He highlighted that the state has already taken significant steps toward law enforcement with measures like the anti-copying law, anti-conversion law, and anti-riot law. Dhami emphasised that these laws have earned Uttarakhand recognition as a state with “zero tolerance” toward crime.

“The Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in the state before November 9, 2024,” Chief Minister Dhami had previously stated, according to news agency ANI.
