Haryana Assembly Election 2024: Ashok Tanwar rejoins Congress in Rahul Gandhi’s presence after rift with Bhupinder Hooda
Haryana Assembly Election: Former Lok Sabha MP Ashok Tanwar has made a surprising return to the Congress party after a tumultuous political journey that included stints with the BJP, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Trinamool Congress. Tanwar rejoined Congress at a rally led by party leader Rahul Gandhi in Mahendragarh, Haryana, today.
Tanwar, a former Congress MP representing Sirsa, previously served as the Haryana Congress chief from 2014 to 2019. He left the party in 2019 and initially aligned himself with the Trinamool Congress in 2021. The following year, he transitioned to AAP but departed from the party before the recent Lok Sabha elections due to his disagreement with AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal over an alliance with Congress.

After his exit from AAP, Tanwar joined the BJP and contested the general elections from the Sirsa constituency, where he faced defeat against Congress candidate Kumari Selja.
In a statement regarding his return to Congress, the party emphasized its commitment to advocating for marginalized and underprivileged communities. “The Congress has always raised its voice for the oppressed and deprived sections of society. Influenced by our struggle and dedication, senior BJP leader, former MP, member of BJP’s campaign committee, and star campaigner Ashok Tanwar has joined the Congress,” the party announced on X (formerly Twitter).
Notably, just hours before his rejoining, Tanwar had been actively tweeting in support of BJP candidates for the Haryana Assembly elections. This quick turnaround caught the attention of observers as he was soon seen at the Congress rally, where the announcer referred to his return as “ghar wapasi” or “homecoming,” signaling his reconnection with his political roots.
Tanwar’s return to Congress raises questions about the dynamics within Haryana’s political landscape, as the party continues to position itself against the ruling BJP and aims to consolidate support ahead of future electoral battles.
