Suryakumar Yadav sledged by India D pacer after Duleep trophy struggles, responds with blunt reaction
PTC News Desk: Suryakumar Yadav’s much-anticipated return to the Duleep Trophy turned into a disappointing outing as the India T20 captain struggled to make an impact, scoring just 5 and 16 in his two innings. The matches marked his comeback after recovering from a thumb injury that had kept him out of the first two rounds of the tournament.
Initially part of the India B squad, Yadav was moved to India C before his return, where expectations were high for him to deliver a memorable performance and make up for lost time.
However, his efforts were short-lived, as he was dismissed in both innings by his World Cup-winning teammate, Arshdeep Singh, who achieved his career-best First-Class figures of 6/40. Arshdeep’s stellar performance led India D to a consolation win over India B in Anantapur.
Following Surya’s first-innings dismissal, Arshdeep added a playful twist to the encounter by mimicking Yadav’s shot near the dressing room and jokingly telling him, “Aise khelna chahiye tha” (That’s how you should have played it). The lighthearted banter was well-received, bringing out a laugh from Yadav.

While Arshdeep’s strong performance stirred hopes for his Test debut, the BCCI selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, chose Yash Dayal and Akash Deep as the third and fourth pacers for the upcoming Bangladesh series. Despite performing well in the Duleep Trophy, Arshdeep missed out, with Dayal’s impressive swing ability and Akash Deep’s steady 2/19 performance in the first innings tilting the balance in their favor.
For Suryakumar, the Duleep Trophy was seen as a crucial opportunity to bolster his case for a spot in the Indian Test team. He has played only one Test so far, in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia last year, where he managed just 8 runs from 20 balls in Nagpur. His lackluster performance in that Test saw him dropped from the red-ball format, and his struggle in the Duleep Trophy further complicates his return to India’s Test squad.
