Supreme Court criticises HC judge for remarks on Pakistan in Karnataka locality case

PTC News Desk: The Supreme Court of India reprimanded a Karnataka High Court judge on Friday, demanding a detailed report regarding controversial remarks made by Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda. During a recent hearing concerning a landlord-tenant dispute, Justice Srishananda referred to a Muslim-majority area in Bengaluru as “Pakistan” and made inappropriate comments about a female advocate, which were perceived as misogynistic.

A five-judge bench, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and including Justices S. Khanna, B.R. Gavai, S. Kant, and H. Roy, underscored the urgent need for clear guidelines governing judicial conduct in court. The bench pointed out that with social media actively monitoring and amplifying courtroom exchanges, it is crucial for judicial remarks to uphold the decorum expected in legal proceedings.

“Attention has been drawn to media reports regarding the comments made by Justice…of Karnataka High Court during the court proceedings. We request the Karnataka High Court to submit a report after consulting with the Chief Justice of the High Court,” Chief Justice Chandrachud remarked, highlighting the necessity for accountability in judicial discourse.
