Karnataka: 46 detained following communal clashes during Ganpati procession in Mandya

PTC News Desk: Karnataka Police detained 46 individuals on Thursday in connection with communal clashes that erupted during a Ganesh Chaturthi procession in Mandya district. The incident took place on Wednesday, September 11, in Badarikoppalu village, where tensions flared between two groups after stones were allegedly thrown from near a mosque at the procession.

In response, several Hindu youths staged a protest by placing the Ganesha idol in front of the local police station, demanding justice. The unrest escalated further as some protestors set fire to nearby shops and torched tyres in anger.

Following the detentions, relatives of those arrested gathered outside the police station, demanding their release. One man voiced his frustration, saying, “Our people did nothing wrong. They were arrested for no reason.”

Police clarified that the detained individuals were brought in for questioning, with assurances that those found innocent would be released. “We have brought them in for questioning. Those who have done nothing wrong will be released,” stated a police official.

Authorities have declared a high alert in the area and imposed Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (order for urgent cases of nuisance or apprehended danger) to restore peace and maintain order.
