PTC News Desk: Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on September 5 across India, commemorating the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the country’s first Vice President and second President. Dr. Radhakrishnan was a renowned scholar, philosopher, and educator. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 1954, and became an honorary member of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.

Why is Teachers’ Day celebrated?
In 1962, when Dr. Radhakrishnan became President of India, a group of his students visited him to celebrate his birthday. In response, he suggested that instead of focusing on his birthday, the day should be dedicated to honoring teachers. Since then, September 5 has been celebrated as Teachers’ Day in India.
Schools and educational institutions across the country observe this day to honor Dr. Radhakrishnan’s legacy and to recognise the invaluable role of teachers in shaping students’ lives.
