Centre to states on Kolkata murder protests; submit updates every 2 hours
PTC News Desk: In response to the widespread outrage following the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the Union Home Ministry has issued a directive to all states, mandating them to provide updates on the law and order situation every two hours. This order highlights the gravity of the situation and the government’s concern over the escalating protests across the country.
The official notification, as reported by PTI, specifies that state police forces must submit continuous two-hourly reports through email, fax, or WhatsApp to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) control room in New Delhi, starting from 4 pm on August 16, 2024.
The directive comes in the wake of the horrific incident that occurred on August 9, where the semi-naked body of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The next day, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested in connection with the crime. The case has since been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Calcutta High Court.
The CBI has ordered a psychoanalysis test for the accused, enlisting a team of experts from Delhi’s Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to carry out the examination.
In addition to the criminal investigation, the incident has sparked nationwide protests led by the medical community. Doctors are not only demanding justice for their slain colleague but are also calling for urgent reforms. Their demands include significant improvements in the working and living conditions of resident doctors and the implementation of a central law to protect healthcare professionals from violence in the workplace.
The Union Home Ministry’s directive underscores the need for close monitoring of the situation as tensions continue to rise across the country, with the public and healthcare professionals alike calling for swift justice and systemic change.
