Paris Olympics 2024: India’s Harmanpreet Singh aims for medal in honour of PR Sreejesh
PTC News Desk: Harmanpreet Singh, the captain of the Indian men’s hockey team, stated that the team hopes to win a medal for retiring goalie PR Sreejesh during their 2024 campaign at the Paris Olympics. Following the occurrence in Paris, Sreejeh, one of India’s greatest goalkeepers ever, made the decision to end his playing career. The 36-year-old was crucial to India’s victory in Tokyo, as they took home the bronze medal.
Sreejesh declared his decision prior to the commencement of the games, despite his previous suggestion that he could play well past the Paris Olympics. Together with Sreejesh, Harmanpreet is headed to his third Olympics. On Instagram, he wrote a heartfelt letter to the India goalie.
Sreejesh has inspired the team, according to the captain of India. Harmanpreet also recalled Sreejesh’s mentorship of the team at the 2016 Jr. Men’s World Cup, which contributed to their victory.
According to Harmanpreet, the team is more motivated to return to the Olympic podium than ever before because they want to ‘win it for Sreejesh.’
“Paris 2024 will undoubtedly be a unique competition. We have made the decision to honor the late PR Sreejesh with our campaign. He has served as an inspiration to all of us, and I vividly recall the Junior World Cup in 2016 when we won thanks to his mentoring. For many of us, it marked the start of our international hockey careers. We are much more motivated to take the podium once more because we want to “Win it for Sreejesh.”

What Sreejesh said about his retirement
Sreejesh revealed his retirement plans on social media, stating that he is extremely proud of his work and that it has been an incredible experience.
“As I get ready for my final dance in Paris, I look forward with optimism and back with great pride. I will always be appreciative of my family, teammates, coaches, and supporters for their love and support during this incredible adventure.”
“I appreciate your faith in me. Celebrating the close of one chapter and the start of a fresh journey,” uttered Sreejesh. On July 27, India will take on New Zealand in their first campaign.
