Supreme Court criticises Delhi government: ‘Why no action against tanker mafia?’

PTC News Desk: The national capital’s water crisis prompted the Supreme Court to criticise the AAP administration on Wednesday for its failure to stop the tanker mafia’s operations. The top court requested the Delhi government to submit an affidavit outlining the steps they had taken to reduce water waste after noting that fraudulent claims had been made in front of it.

The Delhi administration was warned by a vacation bench, made up of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Prasanna B Varale, that the court would order the Delhi police to intervene if the tanker mafia wasn’t dealt with.

“Why were deceptive remarks made in front of this court? If water is arriving in Delhi from Himachal Pradesh, where is it going? Tanker mafias, spills, and other issues abound. The bench questioned, “What steps have you done in this regard?

The court declared that Delhi’s water shortage was causing pain for its citizens.

“Every news station features images of people in distress. Since water scarcity is a summertime issue, what steps have you made to reduce water waste? the bench continued.

Representing the Delhi government, advocate Shadan Farasat stated that measures had been taken, including cutting off water supplies.

Water minister for Delhi, Atishi, asserted on Tuesday that the Haryana government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, has been purposefully and unlawfully cutting off the capital’s water supply.

The minister stated, “The Haryana government has been lying that they have released adequate supply water to Delhi,” citing an affidavit filed by the government before the Supreme Court. The information on the real water discharge presented in their affidavit, which was submitted to the Supreme Court, exposes their deception.

She stated that as of May 23, the Haryana government was providing less water to Delhi.

According to the data in the affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court by the Haryana government, the state releases 330 cusecs of water in the DSB and 719 cusecs of water in the CLC through the Munak Canal between May 1 and May 22. In other words, 1049 cusecs of water were released per day. But starting on May 23, it began to decline. That implies that Haryana cut back on water delivery during the Delhi elections, asserted Atishi.

According to VK Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini informed him on Tuesday that the state was delivering water according to its allotted quota.

The Himachal Pradesh administration was ordered by the court last week to give extra water to help Delhi deal with the situation.
