Near miss at Mumbai Airport as two planes simultaneously take off and land on same runway
PTC News Desk: At Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Saturday, an Air India flight took off just as an IndiGo aircraft was making a landing on the same runway, narrowly averting a potential calamity.
Details indicate that an IndiGo plane from Indore was inadvertently allowed to land on the same runway used by an Air India aircraft departing for Thiruvananthapuram.
The IndiGo aircraft started descending as the Air India aircraft was still speeding down the runway for takeoff, resulting in a near miss. Luckily, a collision was avoided when the Air India flight was able to take off before the IndiGo aircraft made landfall.
An investigation into the incident has been started by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The ATC employee who gave the go-ahead for the IndiGo plane to land on the used runway has been derostered, or removed from duty, while the investigation is ongoing.
