Australian regulator considers ban on MDH and Everest spices; suspected contamination

PTC News Desk: Australia is considering a ban on certain spice products from Indian companies MDH and Everest due to alleged contamination concerns. Following Hong Kong’s recent suspension of sales of three MDH spice blends and an Everest mix for fish curry, Australia’s food safety agency has initiated an investigation into the matter.

The agency aims to determine whether a food recall is necessary, making it the latest regulatory body to escalate scrutiny over these products.

In addition to Hong Kong’s actions, Singapore has also ordered a recall of the Everest mix after detecting elevated levels of ethylene oxide, a pesticide considered unfit for human consumption and a potential carcinogen with prolonged exposure.

The Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety (CFS) confirmed the presence of ethylene oxide in samples collected from retail outlets, prompting the suspension of sales and removal of affected products from shelves. According to a statement from the CFS, the irregularities were identified through routine food surveillance testing.

Addressing the situation, Food Standards Australia New Zealand stated that they are collaborating with international counterparts to comprehend the issue. Moreover, they are coordinating with federal, state, and territory food enforcement agencies within Australia to determine the necessity of further actions in response to these contamination concerns.

Could Australia prohibit Everest and MDH spices?

Australia’s regulatory body may opt for a recall of these products, citing that “Ethylene oxide is not permitted for use as a treatment for foods sold in Australia,” as stated in their announcement.

Furthermore, the US FDA is actively seeking more details regarding the situation, and reports suggest that India is conducting inspections of MDH and Everest’s manufacturing plants.
